I worked for Hewlett Packard for over 20 years, most of it in the inkjet printer side of the business. So I was actually familiar with the concept and technology behind 3D printing when, after I retired from HP, I became a high school STEM teacher. I was asked to start a new pre-engineering and robotics program at the STEM magnet school and introduced the Project Lead The Way curriculum and FIRST Robotics Competition programs to my students. I was thus able to recommend the purchase of a professional grade 3D printer as well as a 50W laser engraver for my students' projects. As a PLTW teacher I had to learn and teach how to use the 3D solid modeling CAD program from Autodesk, Inventor. After I retired from teaching, I turned to lower cost versions of the technology to play with in my modeling hobby. I was able to finance my new "toys" by taking on substitute teaching jobs 😁.
